Canadian Biographies: Books

A guide to support research on the life of a Canadian.

Biographies - searching for the right name

When searching the catalogue, and the web, it is important to consider the different names and titles a person may have. Sometimes, an individual may use a nickname or a portion of his name in his public life. In official biographies, however, he may be known by his official name. It is a good idea, during your preliminary research, to list all the names a person may be known by.

For example:

  • Bram Stoker's full name is Abraham Stoker
  • Tommy Douglas = T.C. Douglas or Thomas Clement Douglas

General books:

The library has a large number of biographies - many are anthologies (include many biographies in one volume). Therefore, when you search the catalogue try:

  1. Canada biography (as subject search)
  2. Look in the index for your person

also try to

  1. Search for your person as a keyword search (will pick up names in the summary of the book)
  2. Narrow your search by searching for your person as a subject search

**remember your individual may be found with different variations of his name.

To browse the collection:

Search the library's Biography section (all Canadian Biographies have a Maple Leaf sticker on the spine)

Search REF 920.071 or 920.071 or 971
