St. Paul's High School Archives: A Time of Transition: The 1980s and 1990s

With the retirement of Fr. Murray in 1982, the Society was left without their long-time leader. In his place, a committee of teachers was organized to oversee the program. This committee, composed of Mr. J. Smith, 
Mr. D. Chase, and Mr. D. Beeston, took the Society in a new direction. Previously unseen genres of plays were introduced with the script selection now under the purview of the director. In the mid-1980s, production schedules were altered to better accommodate school schedules and faculty availability. Members of the Society had mixed reactions to the changes as they resulted in the cancellation of the Christmas production. 
The 1990s saw the arrival of new directors, including Mr. T. Ivory and Mr. R. Comeault. This continued to broaden the Society’s program with performances of The Billion Dollar Saint, 18 Nervous Gumshoes, and Buckshot and Blossoms.
By the end of the 1990s, the Society revived the traditional theatre program, once again featuring a Christmas and Spring performance. These productions reflected the interests of the new Society members, with a full-length play in the Fall and an evening of one-act plays in the Spring, eventually giving way to the dinner theatre performances of the 2000s.
